Noticeboard
Field hockey positions
Strikers
High scorers of the team from field play who spend most of their playing time between the midfield and their opponent’s goal.
Wingers—play up the left and right side of the field. Wingers dribble the ball down the sidelines and pass it towards the middle of the field (cross the ball) in efforts to set up scoring opportunities.
Inners—play up the and down the center of the field and are the team’s primary goal scorers from field play.
Defenders
Defend the opposing forwards and attempt to clear the ball when it gets close to the goal. They are the final line of defense before the goalie.
Fullbacks—cover the opposing wings as they attempt to advance the ball up field and defend against the Inners by trying to keep the ball out of the defending (or their own) circle. Once they gain possession of the ball, they pass to the midfielders to initiate and attacking play.
Sweeper—a single payer positioned closest to their own goal behind the fullbacks. Often is the ‘free’ defender who does not pick up a check but acts as a ‘helper’ when a teammate is beaten.
Midfielders
Also known as ‘Links’, these versatile players play both offense and defense. ‘Links’ are generally positioned between the forwards and the defenders and are mainly responsible for advancing the ball from the defense to the forwards so they can score.
Goalkeeper
Stands in front of goal to block shots with their stack of their bodies, and propel the ball with their feet. Goalkeepers must wear a suitable helmet with full face mask and are also permitted to wear protective padding, including large leg guards, kickers and gloves. Goalkeepers are allowed to play the ball outside their defensive circle (scoring area), but only using their stick.
